In 1946, Highlights for Children was created with the belief that children are intelligent and excited when given an option to learn. With the magazine's success, the Highlights for Children, Inc.'s enterprise has expanded to include seven other companies. From trade-book and textbook publishers to educational seminars and publications, all the members in the Highlights Family of Companies strive to offer children educational opportunities worthy of their abilities.

Zaner-Bloser Educational Publishers, Inc.

Acquired by Highlights for Children in 1972, Zaner-Bloser is located in Columbus, Ohio.

Founded in 1888 as a college of penmanship, Zaner-Bloser is the nation's leading publisher of handwriting and spelling programs for students in grades K-8. This well-respected company also publishes research-proven writing, supplemental reading, and language arts programs used in classrooms throughout the United States.

Boyds Mills Press

The logical development from Highlights' interest in encouraging children's enthusiasm toward reading, Boyds Mills Press was founded in 1990. Intent on providing quality books for all ages of children, Boyds Mills Press publishes picture books, fiction, nonfiction, poetry and activity books. They can be found in libraries, schools and bookstores.

Teachers' Publishing Group

Two divisions—Stenhouse Publishing and Essential Learning Products—make up the Teachers' Publishing Group. They produce professional books written by and for teachers and provide classroom aids developed to supplement skill development and enhance creativity.

  • Essential Learning Products
    Essential Learning Products (ELP), publishes books for both teachers and students which are marketed primarily to teacher stores and educational catalogers. Additionally ELP serves as a distribution channel for a number of the other Highlights companies' products such as Zaner-Bloser journals, Highlights stencils, and Boyds Mills Press craft books.

  • Stenhouse Publishing
    Established in 1993, Stenhouse has become a leading publisher of professional resources for teachers. Staff Development for Educators (SDE)

Founded in 1986 as a resource for educators striving to learn better ways to teach, SDE joined the Highlights family in 1991. Located in Peterborough, NH, SDE was originally known as the Society for Developmental Education.
