Highlights has had five major cover changes. The first cover design, which included the words “Fun with a Purpose,” was used from June 1946 to December 1953. The second cover design, January 1954 to June-July 1957, used characters by illustrator-author Monro Leaf. The third cover design, which first appeared with the August-September 1957 issue, developed the “happy (or smiling) H” Highlights logo and the familiar rhomboid shapes. Variations on this cover design were in use through the December 1980 issue. The fourth cover design, which incorporated illustrations of children and animals on the front and the “What’s Wrong?” activity on the back, appeared in January 1981 and was used through July 2006. Our current cover design, which launched with the August 2006 issue, includes cover lines and continues the tradition of featuring illustrations on the front and “What’s Wrong?” on the back.
