Honesdale, PA... Highlights for Children, Inc. today announced that Highlights High Five, the new magazine for children ages 2 to 6, and Wilkes-Barre PBS affiliate WVIA-TV have partnered to offer a special September fundraising promotion to benefit Head Start agencies throughout the station's viewing area.
Starting September 8 and running through the month of September, when viewers call during "Sesame Street" and make a $120 donation to WVIA, they will receive a complimentary copy of Highlights High Five. Each donation will also trigger the delivery of a package of gifts to a local Head Start agency.
Approximately 175 Head Start agencies in WVIA's 22-county viewing area will receive a yearlong subscription to Highlights High Five, a copy of the award-winning children's book A Splendid Friend Indeed by Suzanne Bloom, published by Boyds Mills Press, a Highlights subsidiary and publisher of children's trade books, and a copy of a new WVIA-produced DVD, "The Magic of Storytelling." This educational program, starring former local television news anchor Kim Supon, is designed to help parents, grandparents, teachers, and librarians engage young children as they read aloud to them.
The magazine's editor, Kathleen Hayes, served as consultant on "The Magic of Storytelling" and will appear in promotional spots during the fundraiser.
"Because Highlights High Five has only been available since Januray, this is an excellent opportunity to introduce the magazine to WVIA viewers, and to the children and teachers in our local Head Start programs," Hayes said.
"We hope that 'The Magic of Storytelling' will inspire adults to pick up a book or a magazine and have fun reading together with their kids," said Hayes. "It's one of the best things they can do to help ensure a love of reading."
