Paint with Sand
Sand adds texture to a craft project or painting. Here's an activity from the July, 2008 issue of Highlights High Five™. If your kids are going to do this indoors, use plenty of newsprint on the table and be prepared with a broom and dust pan! Clean-up is a snap if you've an outdoor work space.

- Pour sand into jars and add a few drops of food coloring.
- Shake jars until sand is colored.
- Put glue on cardboard.
- Sprinkle sand on the glue.
- Wait 15 minutes and shake the cardboard.
See what sticks!

Children can first paint with tempra paint. After their painting dries, they can create texture in selected areas of the picture by applying glue and sand.
Children can apply glue to the surfaces of a small cardboard box and then coat the box with colored sand and small shells, pebbles, or pieces of driftwood.
