Ongoing Value

With content written and edited for all young people from two to twelve years old, Highlights maintains one of the widest age spreads in children's publishing. Highlights is aimed at the pre-reader, at the child just beginning to identify and name familiar objects, and at the advanced middle-school student who enjoys stories and puzzle challenges.

Considered to have more than a one-time value, Highlights contains no features or articles directing the reader to cut up or mark the issue or "the book," as the editors continue to refer to it. Children and parents are urged to keep issues in the home library, where they will be useful for many years in the preparation of school reports and for general rereading. An eight-page title-and-subject index in the December issue each year makes a Highlights collection an excellent resource for schoolwork.

Over the years, the emphasis Highlights has placed on values has earned the magazine special awards from such groups as:

  • The National Conference of Christians and Jews,
  • The Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge,
  • The National Safety Council,
  • The National Association for Gifted Children, and
  • The Educational Press Association of America.

In addition, Highlights for Children, Inc. has been honored for their ethics in business.
