Kent S. Johnson
Chief Executive Officer
Kent S. Johnson is only the third CEO in the history of the company which his great-grandparents, Garry Cleveland Myers, Ph.D., and Caroline Clark Myers, founded in 1946. Johnson is also a member of the family-owned company’s board of directors. Previously, he served as a corporate vice president of strategic management.
Johnson received his bachelor’s degree from Amherst College and his doctorate in physics from Harvard University. Before joining Highlights in 2005, he served in various roles in scientific research and development, manufacturing and operations. Though he’d had no aspirations to join the family media brand, Johnson found himself inspired by the company’s mission to help children become their best selves and motivated by the challenge of carrying that philosophy into new markets around the world.
The company, which publishes educational products for children, including the popular children’s magazine Highlights, has grown to include multiple wholly owned subsidiaries. These include four monthly magazines, book clubs, a children’s trade-book publisher, domestic and international licensing and partnership opportunities, an educational curriculum publisher, a phonics-based literary program for students in kindergarten through second grade, a publisher of professional-development books and videos for teachers, as well as a company that provides direct training seminars for teachers.
“I spend most of my time thinking about the kind of experiences we strive to create for children, says Johnson. “We seek to bring them Fun with a Purpose. We are hoping to create experiences for them that help them become their best selves. By best selves, we mean creative, caring, curious, and confident. We think of ourselves as creating educational experiences that address the whole child.”
Johnson lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife and two sons.
