Highlights Magazine Launches Annual State of the Kid™ Survey

April 1, 2017 (Columbus, OH) — Highlights for Children, the leading family media brand and publisher of the best-read children’s magazine in North America, has announced that the ninth annual State of the Kid™ survey is live and open to children ages 6-12 across the nation. This year, the annual survey gives kids a platform to share their thoughts and feelings about kindness.

 “At Highlights for Children, we believe that children need to be heard. The best way to understand what they’re feeling is to ask them, and then lean in and listen,” said Christine French Cully, editor-in-chief, Highlights magazine. “Most often, it’s what we do, not what we say, that sticks with children. When we actively listen, we are telling them that they are important – and what they have to say matters to us.”

The State of the Kid survey was launched in 2009 as a vehicle to gather kids’ thoughts on topics important to their world and understand what it’s like to be a kid today. This year’s survey seeks kids’ thoughts on what they believe to be ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ behavior and how they perceive what it means to be kind.

 “Learning to be nice and respect the feelings of others is something children are taught by their parents at an early age,” said Cully. “Our survey results will give parents the opportunity to talk to their children about how to not only be kind to others, but also how to cope when others aren’t kind to them.”
