Highlights Magazine Science Editor Andy Boyles Named AAAS Fellow

Columbus, OH • Saturday, February 16, 2013

Andy Boyles, science editor for Highlights magazine, has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Boyles was recognized for “having introduced millions of children to nature’s wonders and the process of science.” Election as an AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers. Boyles accepted the honor today at the 2013 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston, Mass.

For 18 years, Boyles has edited science content for best-read children’s publication Highlights. “Andy’s job is not an easy one,” says Highlights editor Judy Burke. “He is artful at finding a way to share complex concepts with children, while at the same time showing science as an ongoing, self-correcting process.” Boyles hosts annual workshops for science and nature writers designed to encourage, support and nurture quality science writing for children.

Boyles offers this advice for kids interested in science, “The most important thing is to be willing to take an idea and question it. Challenge that idea for yourself and test whether it’s really valid.”

The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. Currently, members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the steering groups of the Association’s 24 sections, or by any three Fellows who are current AAAS
members (so long as two of the three sponsors are not affiliated with the nominee's institution), or by the AAAS chief executive officer. Boyles is a member of the AAAS Section Y (General Interest in Science and Engineering).
