This month, our long-running reader favorite, Goofus and Gallant, encourages kids to maintain focus, stay on task, and give all work their best effort. Check out our Goofus and Gallant recaps here, or take a peek at the June 2016 issue. Then use the conversation starters below to help your child understand why it’s smart to be mindful.
What’s Up with Goofus and Gallant
Recap: Goofus is distracted while using a garden hose outdoors and douses a clothesline full of clothes with a blast of water. Gallant focuses on his surroundings when he cleans his room, carefully picking up socks so they don’t get sucked into the vacuum cleaner.

Conversation Starters:

  1. What should Goofus do to avoid soaking the laundry? What distracted him?

  2. Explain how Gallant prevents the socks from getting swallowed up by the vacuum cleaner.

  3. What could happen if you lose focus while you’re clearing dishes after dinner or riding your bicycle?

  4. Why is it important to pay attention when your teacher or parents are talking?

Recap: Goofus rushes through a test in class, quickly and messily scrawling his answers because he wants to start recess early. Gallant completes his test at a steady pace, thinks about his answers, and checks his work carefully.

Conversation Starters:

  1. What could happen if you rush through a test, just like Goofus did?

  2. Do you think Gallant has strong work and study habits? How do you know this?

  3. Explain why it is wise to review your work carefully.

  4. What do you do (and what do you avoid) to stay focused at school or at home while you do your homework?
