This month, kids learn how they might repair a broken friendship, how to plan an adventure, and what pets love.

Find Dear Highlights on page 42 of the August 2017 issue, or read the recaps here. Use the prompts that follow to strike up a conversation with your child.

In the heat of the moment, Joyce, a Highlights reader, offended a friend online, and now the friend has blocked her. We suggested that Joyce try to apologize to her friend in person or even mail her a letter. We also reminded her it is never a good idea to post a comment when you’re hurt or angry.

Q’s for your kids:

  • Have you ever said or written something you regretted later?
  • Did you apologize right away, or did it take a while to say “I’m sorry”?
  • Did saying “I’m sorry” resolve the problem?
  • How can you avoid saying something that hurts a friend’s feelings?
Lane, from Texas, is looking for excitement and wants an adventure that’s as exciting as those in fantasy books. We said a good first step is trying something new—attending an event at school he wouldn’t ordinarily go to, trying a new activity, hanging out with a new buddy, or even getting his fill of adventure by writing his own fantasy stories.

Q’s for your kids:

  • Have you ever wished you could live in a place you read about in a book or saw in a movie?
  • Describe that place and what made it so appealing.
  • What’s your favorite fantasy story and why do you like it?
  • What’s the most exciting adventure you’ve ever been on?
  • Describe how you planned it and how the events actually unfolded.
A Highlights reader says his dog’s birthday is coming up but he doesn’t know what to get her. We said his dog would appreciate any thoughtful idea, but added that the most important thing is spending time with her.

Q’s for your kids:

  • Do you think pets care about birthdays as much as people do?
  • Even if they don’t, why do people often want to get pets special gifts anyway?
  • What makes a great extra-special gift for a friend or sibling? How about for a parent?
  • What do you use as inspiration for gift giving?
