As readers have come to expect, Arizona responds to the letter writer with a tale of her own about a friendship she almost doomed herself—inadvertently, due to bad timing and miscommunication.

Recap: A reader who signs her letter Giving Up in Galveston says a formerly close friend is now too busy to make time for her—and Giving Up wants to know if it’s time to give up on the friendship.

Arizona reveals that she once almost lost a friendship unintentionally, by spending time with a new friend while neglecting one of her best friends Mareya. Only after Mareya let Arizona know she felt hurt did Arizona realize her mistake. Thanks to Mareya, Arizona learned the importance of talking honestly with friends and not giving up too soon on a friendship. But as Arizona reasoned, if discussions with a friend don’t solve the problem, it’s OK for kids to move on to other friendships.

Conversation Starters:
  • Describe a time you had a misunderstanding with a friend. What was the problem? Were the two of you able to work through the issue? How did you do it?
  • Did you ever make a new friend and accidentally ignore someone you had been close to? 
  • What can you do to avoid favoring certain friends or making other friends feel unwanted?
  • Name a few reasons you might end a friendship. Can you name a few reasons you might become friends with someone?
