Craft skills and math skills add up to some high-velocity fun when little hands make mini versions of Olympic bobsleds (the pros call them “bobs”). Race ’em down a cardboard track and time the results. Which sled is the fastest? Which sled is the flashiest? Try it and see!
Make a Speedy Bobsled
Lean the top of the ramp against a chair or table. Then race your bobsled down the track. In a race, some bobsleds can go as fast as a car on the highway.
What You Need

• Scissors
• Short cardboard tube
• Paint
• Paintbrush
• Tape
• Two plastic bendy straws
• 3-foot-long piece of cardboard

What To Do

1. Cut the cardboard tube open.

2. Paint the cardboard tube.

3. Tape the straws to the bottom of the bobsled. Have the short part of the straw bend, as shown.

4. To make the track, fold the sides of the cardboard up, leaving at least a 3-inch-wide base.

5. Paint the bobsled track. Let dry.
