What You’ll Need
- Glue
- Scissors
- Colored paper
- 2 cereal boxes
- 2 gelatin boxes
- String
What to Do
- Glue colored paper to the cereal boxes and the gelatin boxes.
- Cut an oval hole large enough for your child’s foot in each cereal box.
- Glue one small box to each cereal box so the small box becomes the big toe.
- Make additional toes from colored paper, then glue them to the boxes.
- To make handles, cut two pieces of string to match your child’s height. Fold them in half, and glue one string to each foot. Glue paper over the string to make it stronger.
Extend the Fun
Younger kids: Explain to your child that it can be tricky to walk in these feet, as they’re so much bigger than her own feet. Encourage her to practice walking around the house in them. Challenge her to take really big steps, then to take really small steps. Ask her if it is easier to take big steps or small steps. Then put on some music and help her invent a special monster walk in her monster feet.
Older kids: Ask your child to brainstorm other boxes or containers that could be reused as monster feet. Remind her to think about different shapes—they don’t have to be rectangular or square. Help your child tape or glue the new items onto the feet. And once she’s made her monster feet, put out some paper and markers so she can draw what the rest of her monster looks like.
