Story: There's Not Enough Snow [1]

Sam can’t wait to play in the snow—but is there enough? Read the story to find out. Make plans with your child to decide what you’ll do the next time it snows.

“Snow!” cried Sam, looking out the window.

A white dusting covered the car. Snow covered most of the sidewalk and lawn. Sprinkles of white dotted the trees and bushes. It didn’t look like much, but Sam was sure there was enough to have fun.

He ran to put on his boots, coat, hat, and gloves.

“Where are you going?” asked his mom.

“To make a snow angel!” Sam said.

“There’s not enough snow,” his mother called.

“Yes, there is,” said Sam as he ran outside.

Sam jogged across the yard. He lay down and waved his arms and legs.

Sam sat up. Stood. Then jumped out of the way. He looked back. The grass showed through the snow where he had been lying.

There was not enough snow!

Sam ran to the shed and grabbed his sled. He walked to the hill next to his house.

“Hey, Sam! What are you doing?” called his neighbor Kim, gliding by on her scooter.

“I’m going sledding!” said Sam.

“There’s not enough snow,” she said.

“Yes, there is,” said Sam.

Sam set his sled at the top of the hill. He looked down the slope. Sam sat, feet first. He shimmied. He moved just a little. He pushed off with his hands. He moved a little more. Sam stood up. Holding the sled against his chest, he ran and lay down, stomach first. He moved forward about six inches and stopped.

There was not enough snow!

Sam walked back to his yard and smooshed the snow together to form a snowball.

“Hey, Sam! What are you doing?” called his brother, Drew, taking his bike from the garage.

“I’m building a snowman!”

“There’s not enough snow,” Drew said.

“Yes, there is,” said Sam.

Sam rolled his little snowball on the snow-dusted ground. The snowball did not grow much bigger. Sam packed the snow tighter. He pushed harder. When
he opened his hands, the snow crumbled and the flakes drifted away.

There was not enough snow!

Sam shivered. His stomach grumbled.

Sam went inside the house. He peeled off his wet boots, coat, hat, and gloves and headed for the kitchen.

“How was the snow?” asked his mom.

“There wasn’t enough snow for a snow angel. There wasn’t enough snow for sledding. There wasn’t even enough snow to make a snowball.”

“Oh, that’s too bad,” said Mom.

Sam smiled. “But there is enough snow for one thing. Hot chocolate!”
