Find-the-Face Game [1]

Make the pieces, then play the game!
What You’ll Need
  • Lids (six or more)
  • Cardstock
  • Glue
  • Decorations, such as
    • Buttons*
    • Chenille sticks
    • Markers
    • Pompoms
    • Wiggle eyes *
    • Craft gems*

*These can be a choking hazard, so close supervision is needed.

What to Do
  1. Collect at least six lids of various sizes from jars or yogurt containers. Cover them with cardstock.
  2. Make a different face on each lid using buttons, chenille sticks, markers, pompoms, wiggle eyes, craft gems, or any other fun decorations of your choice.
To Play
  1. Spread out the faces.
  2. One player secretly selects a face without touching it or telling the other player.
  3. The other player tries to guess which face the other person chose by asking yes or no questions. (“Does it have three eyes?” “Nope.”)
  4. After the right face is chosen, the players switch roles.
  5. The player who guesses correctly by asking the fewest questions wins that round.
Extend the Fun

For younger kids: Play with a small number of lids (four to six) to make the guessing easier. Or play a matching game: Decorate pairs of lids to look alike (two green, two dogs, two smiling faces); match them up by color, animal, or description (“lids with wiggle eyes,” “lids with ears,” “faces that look surprised”).

For older kids: Practice math skills by turning this guessing game into a numbers game between Professor and Student. The Professor recites a math problem (“Two red lids plus one green lid minus one red lid plus one orange lid equals how many lids?”) The Student chooses the correct lids and adds and subtracts as instructed. Take turns being the Professor and the Student. Make the problems progressively harder as you go along.

This colorful project packs a one-two punch: it’s a feast for the eyes and a brain workout too. Kids decorate jar lids as game pieces, then play a guessing game that calls for critical-thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. It’s learning disguised as fun!
