Highlights for Children, a family media brand that has been nurturing children with excellent, wholesome, and innovative products for more than 70 years, reaches over two million children every month throughout the world. Our wide variety of “Fun with a Purpose” magazines and books are dedicated to helping children become their best selves—creative, curious, caring, and confident.

Highlights currently has an opening for a Director, Publishing Production. As one of today's premier media brands for children, Highlights has a broad reach including domestic and international product mixes ranging from magazines, book clubs, trade books, digital content, and partnership agreements.

The Director, Publishing Production is responsible for all aspects of production and execution in key print categories, including book, magazine, commercial print, sales and marketing collateral, and ad-hoc projects.  The Director, Publishing Production will oversee and coordinate production schedules, print specifications for all book and magazine products and ensure printed materials meet the highest quality requirements.  Daily communication with internal team members and Editorial teams are keys to the success in this role. We are looking for someone who has a positive, professional, friendly attitude and the ability to work in a team environment and is project management driven to deliver solid print solutions.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage all Highlights for Children jobs on-budget, on-time, and with the highest level of service and quality.
  • Gather accurate job requirements and perform procurement and project management of campaign or effort with understanding of objectives.
  • Manage job production, delivery and invoicing; ensure all jobs are delivered on-time.
  • Expedite operations that delay or alter schedules to meet unforeseen conditions.
  • Build relationships with all participants and develop communication channels to ensure smooth workflow; liaison between internal stakeholders, freelancers and suppliers to guarantee quality, on-time delivery within budget parameters.
  • Investigate potential suppliers and recommend those most desirable based on knowledge of manufacturing limitations, supplier facilities and schedule availability.
  • Enter all specifications into our system which is shared with all stakeholders.
  • Manage all aspects of production with all stakeholders concerning delivery timetables and maintaining current status of assigned projects at all times.
  • Work within established operating budgets and maintain daily tracking and analysis of benchmarking information; analyze job revenue, cost and profitability by job and/or project.
  • Developing program strategies which are both beneficial and economical for Highlights for Children.
  • Proactively identify and present additional production solutions to continuously position Highlights for Children to grow and generate revenue.
  • Consistently exceed expectations and provide superior service.

Skills:

  • Experience with or willingness to learn Adobe Creative Suite products—especially InDesign and Photoshop, and Acrobat Pro.
  • Understanding of Editorial and Creative processes.
  • Strong focus and execution abilities and skills.
  • Deadline driven.
  • Ability to be flexible and to relate to rapidly changing situations.
  • Solid organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree at minimum
  • 5+ years working in book production, magazine production and print production management
  • Detailed track record of successful and seamless production management and project management
  • Prior experience working closely with Editors, Art Directors and Designers preferred
  • Knowledge of the K4 Cross Media Publishing Platform preferred
  • Knowledgeable of Adobe Creative Cloud essential
  • Understanding of Pre-Media/Prepress ideal
  • Entrepreneurial minded with an internal drive to continuously hit goals and succeed 
  • Experience excelling within fast paced, high energy environments
  • Demonstrated interests in children and publishing
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to relocate to northeastern Pennsylvania
