Our wide variety of “Fun with a Purpose” magazines and books are dedicated to helping children become their best selves—creative, curious, caring, and confident.

We are currently seeking a Sales Director to maximize sales for the Highlights Book division in the Retail group.  This highly visible role is involved in all stages of the publishing process, communicates across all levels and departments, and is responsible for helping to identify and grow sales.  The Director serves as the primary liaison with our distribution partner. This position also participates heavily in planning and running seasonal and weekly meetings, and other meetings as needed.

 Specific responsibilities include:

  • Engage deeply with distributor to ensure that our publishing strategy, goals, and financial benchmarks are understood and being met.
  • Responsible for managing and growing direct sales business to a select list of house accounts.
  • Provides strategic oversight and execution of proprietary publishing opportunities.
  • Create and analyze sales reports for front list, backlist, and reorder opportunities.
  • Work with leadership team to develop publishing and marketplace strategies (including our product licensing business), and set sales appropriate sales goals.
  • Lead ongoing sales and merchandising discussions with distributor and publishing team.
  • Work with Associate Publisher, Finance, and Inventory to anticipate stock needs.
  • Participate in planning agendas and running various meetings.
  • Provide marketplace feedback (data, trends, etc.) to the publishing team on a proactive and ongoing basis, to inform our publishing programs.
  • Engage directly with Highlights’ Direct-to-Consumer business to identify and create opportunities for increased sales and greater brand reach.


  • Minimum of 10 years prior sales and/or publishing management experience with a knowledge of account base
  • Knowledge of children’s book marketplace
  • Strong sales analysis and negotiation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with employees across all levels and functions within an organization
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and effectively problem solve
  • Highly proactive with the ability to adapt quickly to changes
  • 30-40% travel including weekly meetings in Honesdale, PA and weekly meetings with distributor in New York City.
